How to view e-mail message headers

This article describes how to view the raw e-mail message headers using various client applications. Email headers provide diagnostic details like sender server, message path, and anti-spam results for troubleshooting.

About e-mail message headers

Email headers show low-level details about a message:

  • Who sent the message and from what server
  • The complete path the message took to reach you
  • Anti-spam testing results and scores

When troubleshooting email issues, support teams often need these headers to diagnose delivery problems.

Mozilla Thunderbird

  1. Open the message in Thunderbird.
  2. On the View menu, click Headers, then All.
  3. To view the complete raw message: ViewMessage Source.
  4. To save as EML: FileSave AsFile.

Microsoft Outlook

  1. Open the message in Outlook.
  2. FileInfoProperties.
  3. View headers under Internet headers.
  4. To save as MSG: FileSave AsOutlook Message Format (*.msg).

Microsoft Outlook Express / Windows Mail

  1. Open the message.
  2. FilePropertiesDetails tab.
  3. Click Message Source for full headers.
  4. To save as EML: FileSave AsMail (*.eml).

Apple (Mac) Mail

  1. Open the message in Mac Mail.
  2. ViewMessageAll Headers.
  3. For raw source: ViewMessageRaw Source.
  4. Return to normal: ViewMessageOriginal Content.
  5. To save: FileSave AsRaw Message Source.

Roundcube webmail

  1. Open the message in Roundcube.
  2. In the toolbar, click MoreShow source.
  3. To save as EML: MoreDownload (.eml).
